An example of cheap thongs which people in developing coutries buy because they cannot afford better shoes.. These plastic thongs often end up as rubbish.. Donating gently worn shoes prevents landfill here and in other countries...

These Shoes Started It All - When Volker Euler took this photo of his crocs on the Annapurna Circuit in October 2009, he had an inspiration to start a shoe charity with his partner Sue ... They got onto it as soon as they returned to Sydney !!

First "spiritual" pair of shoes- Sue and Volker met a fellow trekker in the mountains who wanted to be the first to donate shoes. Josee-Anne promised and then later mailed her shoes from Canada, costing over $60 postage but it was worth it!

This box was created at South Turramurra Primary School After School Service. It was filled many times over with shoes and sox!

Funny is that Volker's Crocs in the original poster made it onto their sign. "Crocs and Socks and Thongs" sounds like a German / Aussie game ....

Bags arrive from staff and students, schools and some TAFE colleges nearby. We box them and a week later a new mountain has grown ... !

We learned to have empty boxes on stand-by. After many box crisises in the past, now IT support and cleaners and main store ALL save and supply boxes to us .... We haven't had too many yet ....

IT clown extraordinaire, Chris, is practicing his Tetris skill on a shoe box.

First real pile right at the start. We had to move out of Store 2 and it all was moved to Store 3....

Store Room 3 - The day we moved it all to an underground storage area...

We filled the whole area pretty quickly and realised that it was not going to be big enough here. So we looked for yet another home before it would go into a shipping container.. This led us to "Store 5" in the end.

Our special golf buggy "ute" helped us a lot !!

At the Main Store (Store Room 4) Cling Wrapping for stability. 1000 shoes per palette we learned that day.

Ami shows her new skill in area 4. Here we stack onto palettes all the boxes we filled at our counter. This includes hundreds of garbage bags of shoes that had to be boxed.

This is where other College deliveries arrive. We sort onto palettes and cling wrap here before they go into final storage. Ami just learned to use a manual fork lift !

Dunbar building / former UTS building (aka "Store Room 5") also serves as final storage area. We could put 3 million shoes in here (if the lifts were working)..

First day going into Store 5. Truck has shoes from Crows Nest TAFE, St. Ives and Avon. Getting ready for Bill to fork lift palettes away.

Palette on right just fell apart right there ... all this needs cleaning up and re-packing. Near back door - some limited fork lift access thankfully...
